What you Really want to know..
What is Punch Hooking?
Punch hooking, also known as punch needle is in the Fiber arts family. Not to be confused with needle point, punch hooking uses the tension of the substrate fabric to hold in the yarn stitches. This requires the base frame or hoop to be properly stretched very taught to ensure the integrity of the piece of art. After the substrate fabric is stretched, its time for the under-drawing! This can be made with any type of fabric marker and will be the “map” for you to follow with your needle and yarn. The front side of the stretched fabric displays the tightly organized stitches and the backside of the fabric displays the loops which can be longer and more organic in form. The backside loops are often trimmed down for neatness and presentation.
Where do you get your images and designs?
All of my images are my own and are original. I have many inspirations including wildlife, travel, tropical plants and animals…etc. I could go on and on! I love using bright colors and stitch direction to tell stories. Because I have such a wide array of interests and inspirations it creates a very wide array of image content and I believe there is something everyone can enjoy!
Can your pieces be framed?
Some of them can be! My pieces are stretched embroidery cloth onto a wooden stretcher frame. These stretcher frames are either 1 inch or 2 inches thick. My pieces made on the 1 inch wooden stretchers can absolutely be framed (I make custom frames to fit these pieces if you so wish!). Keep in mind not every frame shop will work with this type of stretched fiber art.
The pieces on 2 inch stretchers are much more difficult to frame and the frames have to be a lot a lot thicker. Unfortunately this causes these pieces to sit off the wall a good bit more than your traditional frame.
If you have questions about my frames or would like me to frame one of my unframed pieces for you, please contact me and we can discuss options!
